Dental Anxiety
To help feel less nervous about a dental visit, try the following:
- Talk about your fears. Tell us that you are nervous, and try to explain why. This way we can do everything possible to put you at ease.
- Ask us about what is going to happen and why; we would like to tell you anyway so that you can be completely informed and at ease. If you understand the steps of getting a filling, for example, you may feel less nervous about it. Ask us to tell you when we are moving from one step in a procedure to another step.
- Make your dental visit at a time when you are not rushed or under pressure. An early morning or late afternoon appointment may be the best time.
- If the sound of the drill bothers you, you could bring your own audio player and headphones or you could bring your favorite CD. We have a CD player and head phones for your use and convenience. We will agree on hand signals to communicate discomfort, or if you need a break.
- Ask about relaxation techniques. As you sit in the chair, try deep breathing or thinking about a favorite activity or place.
